I am Russell P. From, proprietor, winemaker, and waste water specialist at Herman Story Wines.

Herman Story Wines are made, schlepped, peddled, and drunk with friends by me. The basic web design books tell me that you're probably here for the basics: to find release schedules, ordering information and tasting opportunities for the wines I make, which sounds pretty good to me. The less time I spend writing this stuff the more time I spend in the cellar. So here you go, all the facts with none of the filler. An aesthetic I stand by and believe my wines do too.

I release my wines twice a year, in Spring and Fall. The wines listed below were set loose right around mid-September in 2018. Our wine club is currently full.   • Varietal: Grenache

  • Appellation: California

  • Aging: 30% New French Oak for 48 months in barrel

  • 626 cases made

TASTING NOTES: It’s time to head up to the cabin by the lake and take in the natural setting. Walking through the nearby forest, you can smell soil recently struck by lightning. The setting is elegant but rustic, with burnt marshmallows and coffee roasting over the granite fire pit. Later, there will be wild blueberry pie straight out of the oven and a nip or two out of Grandpa’s absinthe stash. You playfully dance with the stuffed and mounted grizzly bear in the corner, the one that came looking for a fight all those years ago but now stands ready with a furry embrace. Go ahead and enjoy.   • Aging: 55% New French Oak for 24 months in barrel, 25% whole cluster

TASTING NOTES: Saturday night at Craft is the place to be. Valet the Excalibur and drop yourself into one of the luxurious leather booths. Cigar smoke lingers in the air as the aroma of exquisitely prepared cuts come from the kitchen. The dinner captain carves you a generous portion of peppercorn-crusted prime rib right at your table as you take in the rich earthy colors and textures of the dining room from another era. Lazaretto cherries come to mind as the wine marries well with the meat. (DRINK NOW: 45 minute decant CELLAR: Now through 6-8 years)

  • Aging: 70% New French Oak for 24 months in barrel

TASTING NOTES: If wines were like fashion, this would be prete a porter. It’s that perfect little black dress that transitions seamlessly from an afternoon sipping on cinnamon hibiscus highballs in the Upper East Side to an evening dancing in SoHo. The next morning, you hop into a finely upholstered Uber XL, sipping cardamom tea as you head out of the city for weekend adventure featuring a stay at the little country inn that serves an unforgettable Apricot-Glazed Pork Shoulder. Because that’s just how you roll. (DRINK NOW: 2 hour decant, CELLAR: Now through 7-8 years)

  • Aging: 80% New French Oak for 24 months

TASTING NOTES: Saturday mornings at Grandma’s were trippy with cartoons, raspberry rugelach and her cleaning her pistol at the kitchen table. After an hours long bruch of earl grey tea, bacon, cherry cinnamon roll, fresh blackberries, grilled toast and rare steak, she’ll take you outside to try to teach you how to shoot a dime out of the air. She nearly never misses. The scent of the spent shells mixed with her delicate rose perfume lingers with you forever.  (DRINK NOW: 1 hour decant, CELLAR: Now through 8+ years)


  • Varietals: 98% Syrah cofermented with 2% Viognier

  • Appellation: Santa Barbara County

  • Aging: 100% New French Oak for 24 months

  • 368 cases made

TASTING NOTES: Like sauntering to the head of the class, knowing the answer to a Good-Will-Hunting-esque problem, only to trip over your new leather shoelace, fall face first into the slate chalkboard and back onto Jenny’s black forest birthday cake: maraschino cherry embarrassment, clapped eraser, polished patent leather, baking chocolate, spilt espresso, ginger spice cake, contraband cloves, fresh black earth, currant jam and black Mr. Sketches all swirling like stars around the realization that in 10 years this will be the only thing anyone remembers.   (DRINK NOW: 30 minute decant, CELLAR: Now through 10+ years)


  • Varietals: 78% Syrah, 22% Grenache

  • Appellation: York Mountain

  • Aging: 80% New French Oak for 24 months

  • 222 cases made

TASTING NOTES: You’ll be damned if you don’t just love Blackberry Farm. Check out this mini bar situation: Vietnamese coffees, Thai chocolate truffles, Cherry Swisher Sweets, Oolong tea and tiny bottles of Alpine kirsch. These sheets feel like clouds and they even give you a fresh baguette with churned butter and jars of strawberry jam and boysenberry compote. There’s a just picked bouquet of violets and wild roses. Ahh yes, this is the life, it’ll be 30 minutes before anyone notices you’re trespassing.  (DRINK NOW: 1 hour decant, CELLAR: Now through 8 years)


2014 426 DAYS

  • Varietal: Grenache

  • Appellation: California

  • Aging: Aged in one New French Foudre for 426 days on original stems in skins, pressed and aged in 100% New French Oak barrels for 1 year

  • 283 cases made

TASTING NOTES: It’s miraculous! Your sister married René Redzepi and your weekend shooting at the club has suddenly transformed into a Noma curated Golden Corral. There’s Peking duck in 7 glazes: sweet tea, classic, Guatemalan mole, Jasmine, huckleberry shrub, Tandoori and scythe-cut herb garden (whatever that means). Feathers three ways: over figs, under truffles and between tarriens of steaming eucalyptus. A dessert table with dollops of cream from all 8 major peaks of the Dolomites pad the flavors of early August Alpine strawberries. It’s only 6PM and you’re already spilling the Admiral’s ‘47 Armangaic down your chin. (DRINK NOW: Over the course of 3 days CELLAR: Till I say WHEN)
