I am Russell P. From, proprietor, winemaker and waste water specialist at Herman Story Wines.

Herman Story Wines are made, schlepped, peddled, and drunk with friends by me. The basic web design books tell me that you're probably here for the basics: to find release schedules, ordering information and tasting opportunities for the wines I make, which sounds pretty good to me. The less time I spend writing this stuff the more time I spend in the cellar. So here you go, all the facts with none of the filler. An aesthetic I stand by and believe my wines do too.

I release my wines twice a year, in Spring and Fall. The wines listed below were set loose right around mid-March in 2017. Our wine club is currently full. However, if you want to get in on the action and try some of my stuff, you can scroll down and join the MAILING LIST, or come visit me at my Tasting Room in Downtown Paso Robles at

1227 Paso Robles Street, Paso Robles, CA 93446.

It's open Thursday - Monday from 11AM - 5PM and I would love to see your shining face there.

Earnestly yours,

Russell P. From

  • Varietal: 100% Viognier
  • Appellation: Santa Barbara County
  • Vineyards: Bien Nacido, Larner
  • Aging: 100% New French Oak for 9 months
  • 270 cases made

TASTING NOTES: This is the memory of that time you packed in 10 miles to a natural hot spring in the Eastern Sierras in January, only to find the best pool taken by someone you initially mistook as a perfume model but who actually earns their living as a smokejumper. Alba white truffle, lemongrass, white gumdrops, distant Christmas cabin fire, bergamot, fire charred peach, French Silk ice cream, white chocolate ganache and orange flower water. (DRINK NOW: Pop & Pour!)

  • Varietals: 100% Grenache
  • Appellation: Santa Maria Valley
  • Vineyard: Bien Nacido
  • Aging: 80% New French Oak for 30 months
  • 412 cases made

TASTING NOTES: If Huckleberry Finn ever actually reached drinking age, this is the wine that he’d turn to to remember the good ol’ days: fresh mint fireworks, well oiled Frye boots, Dr. Pepper, Cheerwine, Mexican vanilla, Wisteria, Idaho huckleberries, ancient anisette, black elderberry syrup and hand to hand combat. (DRINK NOW: 1 hour decant, CELLAR: 7+ years)

  • Varietals: 100% Syrah
  • Appellation: Santa Maria Valley
  • Vineyard: Bien Nacido
  • Aging: 100% New French Oak for 30 months
  • 392 cases made

TASTING NOTES: A friend of mine knows this Chilean lumberjack who goes into the woods for 3 weeks at a time with nothing but a carboy of Cameriere, packs of mate and a two handed saw. He subsists on that and whatever animals he can trap and drags the logs to the river. is is a wine that would make that gentleman proud. Cadbury Milk chocolate bar, bacon sandwich on grilled toast, oil brined olives, Alpine amaro, trod garrigue, melted frozen strawberries and Schaffenberger dark chocolate. With just enough growl to keep you awake at night. (DRINK NOW: 1.5+ hour decant, CELLAR: 8 years)

  • Varietals: 100% Syrah
  • Appellation: California
  • Vineyards: Slide Hill, Denlinger, Shadow Canyon, White Hawk, Bien Nacido, Jespersen, Presquile, Alta Colina
  • Aging: 85% New French Oak for 18 months
  • 1107 cases made

TASTING NOTES: You know the stories that your grandparents tell about growing up that seem to encompass every person you’ve ever met, but are told so deeply that you never want to leave your seat or the world they’re spinning? This is the building blocks of all of those stories: Ripe red roses, broiled brown sugar, Amsterdamer tobacco, mole, reglisse, Haribo cola candies, crushed red velvet seats in a Crown Vic, 4th of July rib-eyes and black rhino. (DRINK NOW: 45 minute decant, CELLAR: 6 years)

  • Varietals: 35% Tempranillo, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Syrah
  • Appellation: Paso Robles
  • Vineyards: Denlinger, Shadow Canyon, Alta Colina, Jada, Chelle Mountain, White Cliffs, Yankowski-Weeks
  • Vinification: 25% whole cluster fermentation
  • Aging: 87% New French Oak for 18 months
  • 921 cases made

TASTING NOTES: This is a winter solstice dinner with the lost Dauphin at the Nam Hai Four Seasons in Hoi An. Black earth, rare beef Pho, hoisin sauce, warmed whole star anise, creosote, Fernet and Coke, rose hip tea, distant diesel, sarsaparilla, lapsang souchong tea all finished with night dense coffee and condensed milk and the brooding sense that your card will be declined. (DRINK NOW: 30 minute decant, CELLAR: 5+ years)

  • Varietal: 100% Grenache
  • Appellation: California
  • Vineyards: Chelle Mountain, Bien Nacido, Murmur, Slide Hill
  • Aging: Neutral barrel fermented and aged, saigneé style for 6 months

TASTING NOTES: Like a David Hasselhoff Baywatch beach party on the shores of Candy Land Isle serenaded by Christopher Cross. Line caught Swedish fish, raspberry cordial, pink peppercorn tea, licorice rope string bikini and triumphant fisticuffs with a tiger shark. (DRINK NOW: Straight from the bottle. CELLAR: Let's not kid ourselves here, you don't have the patience to cellar this.)

  • Varietal: 100% Mourvèdre
  • Appellation: Santa Barbara County
  • Vineyard: Santa Barbara Highlands
  • Aging: 30% New French Oak for 36 months
  • 200 cases made

TASTING NOTES: It is a well known fact that Eurovans are by every objective measure better vehicles than Vanagons but there’s just something about a Vanagon that makes it more desirable. It’s got to be that element of Wabi Sabi, that piece that makes Dolly Parton’s voice unfit for opera but perfect for tears. This is listening to Jolene on a cassette deck in Joshua Tree. Rare tar, sun warmed blackberry, red-oak grilled cherry, sage smudge, spiced blackberry compote and violin resin. (DRINK NOW: 30 minutes, CELLAR: 4+ years.)
